This Black August, in honor of the countless Black revolutionaries and political prisoners who have come before us, we’re proud to announce the launch of our brand new broadside publication Youth Prison Watch, and its inaugural edition!
The Black August Edition

Youth Prison Watch is designed to draw attention to the state of youth prisons in the U.S., to whistleblow when we hear whispers about new youth prison builds and to amplify the powerful ways young people are fighting back.
While grassroots organizing and advocacy has driven a remarkable 75% drop in youth incarceration and an 80% plummet in arrest rates since 2000, we’re now facing a cynical push to reverse this progress. In the Black August edition of Youth Prison Watch, we expose how lawmakers and architects are proposing expensive new “trauma-informed” youth facilities across the country.
Despite rampant reports about the profound failure of youth prisons to rehabilitate, heal and actually make our communities safer, legislators continue to swear by a system whose only justification seems to be control and capital.
From Angola to Attica, history has shown us over and over again that the problem isn’t the facilities – it’s the system itself.
We’re calling you to action – we want Youth Prison Watch in the hands of every organizer, every family and every person committed to our work.
